Privacy policy

Your measurements stay in your browser

Every shape you draw and every area, perimeter and conversion the tool computes is calculated entirely in your browser. The corners you tap, the boundaries you trace and the results you read are never uploaded to our server or anyone else’s — close the tab and they are gone. We could not show you a history of what you measured even if you asked, because it never existed on our side.

No accounts, no cookies

The site has no accounts, no sign-in and no payments, so it collects no email addresses, passwords or billing details. It also sets no cookies — there is no cookie banner because there is nothing to consent to.

Analytics

When analytics is enabled, the site uses Plausible, a privacy-first, cookieless analytics service, to count page views and a small number of product events (such as an App Store link being clicked). Plausible uses no cookies and no persistent identifiers, does not follow you across sites, and shows us only aggregate numbers. The locations you view and the shapes you draw are never sent to it.

Address search

When you search for an address or place, the text you typed is sent through our server to Nominatim, the OpenStreetMap geocoding service, which turns it into map coordinates. Our server proxies the query and does not store it — it exists only long enough to fetch the result (responses are briefly cached by query text to keep the search fast, not tied to you). Nominatim processes queries under the OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy.

Map tiles

The map loads satellite imagery tiles from Esri and street-map tiles from OpenFreeMap. Like any web request, a tile request exposes your IP address and the tile coordinates of the area you are looking at to those services, which operate under their own privacy policies. This is how every web map works; no measuring data is attached to those requests.

Your device location

If you use the “use my location” feature and grant the browser permission, your position is used locally to center the map. It is not sent to our server. Decline the permission and everything else still works.

Server logs

Standard web-server logs exist for operations — keeping the site up, diagnosing errors and blocking abuse. They contain the usual request metadata (IP address, user agent, requested path, timestamp) and are used only for running the service.

The iPhone app

The Field Area Measure Map iPhone app is covered by its own policy at pocketknifeapps.com/privacy.html, which describes how the app handles measurements, GPS data and iCloud sync on your device.
